01 Solar savings

Solar savings estimate.

First-year generation, the STC discount for your postcode, and 10 and 25 year savings net of panel degradation.

Enter the price before STCs. The STC estimate is deducted separately so both figures are visible.

Your system
kW
Residential systems are typically 6 to 13 kW. Commercial systems 30 kW and above.
Zone 3
Sets the STC zone rating.
STCs shrink each year until the scheme ends in 2030.
%
Daytime businesses often reach 70 to 90%. Homes unoccupied by day, 20 to 40%.
$per kW
Use your quoted price where available. The default equates to about $1,090 per kW after STCs.
$each
Assumed value. The market traded near $39.85 in early October 2026 and the clearing house price is $40.
Sun, tariffs and wear
h/day
4.5 is a common planning figure for South East Queensland.
0 to 1
Losses from heat, dust, wiring and the inverter.
% a year
Output lost each year. Most panel warranties allow about this.
c/kWh
From a recent electricity bill.
c/kWh
What your retailer pays for exports.
% a year
Applied to the import tariff. Set to 0 to ignore.
Method
  1. Year one generation = size × peak sun hours × 365 × performance ratio.
  2. Each later year loses the degradation rate, compounding.
  3. Saving each year = energy used on site × import tariff (rising by the tariff rise) + energy exported × feed-in tariff (flat unless you tick the box).
  4. STCs = size × zone rating × deeming years, rounded down. Deeming is 5 years for 2026 installs, then 4, 3, 2 and 1 to 2030. Zone ratings: Zone 1 1.622, Zone 2 1.536, Zone 3 1.382, Zone 4 1.185.
  5. Net price = size × price per kW, less STCs × STC price. Payback is the year savings add up to the net price.

Systems over 100 kW and up to 1 MW installed from 1 October 2026 fall under the new mid-scale rules, with a fixed 5 year deeming period. Over 1 MW, no STCs apply. Sources: Clean Energy Regulator postcode zone ratings and STC guidance. Tariffs and prices are assumptions you can change.

02 Battery savings

Battery savings estimate.

The federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount, calculated the way the scheme calculates it, plus the value of stored solar used at night instead of grid power.

For installs from May to December 2026 the factor is 6.8 STCs per usable kWh on the first 14 kWh. It steps down every six months.

Your battery
kWh
The headline size on the datasheet. The discount covers 5 to 100 kWh.
%
11.7 kWh usable.
a day
One full charge and discharge a day is typical with solar.
%
Energy out compared with energy in.
% a year
2% leaves about 83% after 10 years. Check the warranty.
years
Most warranties run 10 years.
Price, discount and tariffs
$per kWh
Per nominal kWh. Use your quoted price where available.
Sets the STCs per usable kWh.
$each
Assumed value. Installers often pass on slightly less than market.
c/kWh
The value of each stored kWh.
c/kWh
Income forgone by storing solar rather than exporting it.
% a year
Applied to the import tariff only.
Method
  1. Usable capacity = nominal capacity × usable share.
  2. Discount kWh = the first 14 usable kWh in full, 60% of the next 14, 15% of the next 22, and nothing above 50 usable kWh.
  3. STCs = discount kWh × the factor for your install period, rounded down. Discount = STCs × STC price. Only systems from 5 to 100 kWh nominal qualify.
  4. Energy delivered each year = usable capacity × cycles × 365 × round-trip efficiency, with capacity falling by the yearly loss.
  5. Saving each year = energy delivered × import tariff, less the energy charged × feed-in tariff.

The scheme sets the factor to equal roughly a 30% discount on a typical system. Factors by period: 6.8 (May to Dec 2026), 5.7 and 5.2 (2027), 4.6 and 4.1 (2028), 3.6 and 3.1 (2029), 2.6 and 2.1 (2030). Source: Clean Energy Regulator, battery STC entitlements, updated 18 September 2026. Tariffs and prices are assumptions you can change.

03 Diesel offset

Diesel offset estimate.

A battery carries the load for part of the day and the generator shuts down. The saving is fuel not burned and service hours not run.

The fuel tax credit is applied by default, as most businesses running generators claim it. Untick it if it does not apply.

Your generator
kVA
80 kW at a 0.8 power factor.
0 to 1
0.8 is the usual rating basis.
% of rated
Many site generators run well under half load.
h/day
Average across the year.
% of run hours
The generator is off for these hours.
Charging from the generator saves far less fuel.
Fuel, tax credit and servicing
$per litre ex GST
What you pay before any fuel tax credit.
$per litre
ATO rate for off-road business use from 3 August 2026. It changes each February and August.
$per run hour
Servicing, parts and overhaul reserve per run hour. Use site records where available.
%
Used when the generator recharges the battery.
L/h per rated kW
Typical value. The generator datasheet will give a more accurate figure.
L/h per load kW
Typical value.
Method
  1. Rated kW = kVA × power factor. Load kW = rated kW × average load.
  2. Fuel burn in litres an hour = 0.08 × rated kW + 0.25 × load kW. These are typical values for a diesel generator. A small generator idling still burns fuel, which is why switching it off matters.
  3. Generator hours avoided = run hours × 365 × share covered by the battery.
  4. Litres saved = hours avoided × fuel burn. If the generator recharges the battery, we add back the fuel to make that energy again (0.25 × the energy ÷ efficiency).
  5. Fuel saving = litres saved × (diesel price less the fuel tax credit, if claimed). Servicing saving = hours avoided × servicing cost per hour.
  6. CO2 avoided = litres saved × 2.68 kg per litre.

Sources: Australian Taxation Office fuel tax credit rates (53.7 cents a litre for other business uses from 3 August 2026). Fuel curve and servicing cost are typical assumptions you can change. The calculator does not size the battery or solar. The battery energy figure in the results is a starting point only.

04 Carbon

Emissions avoided, in tonnes.

Avoided grid electricity or diesel, converted to tonnes of CO2. Grid factors vary widely by state.

Grid figures use the 2026 National Greenhouse Accounts scope 2 factors.

What you avoid
kWh a year
Use first-year solar generation or litres saved from the calculators above.
Method
  1. Grid: kWh × the state's scope 2 factor (kg CO2-e per kWh) ÷ 1,000.
  2. Diesel: litres × 2.68 kg CO2 per litre ÷ 1,000.
  3. 10 year total = one year × 10, with no change in the grid factor.

Factors (kg CO2-e per kWh): Queensland 0.65, New South Wales and ACT 0.60, Victoria 0.74, South Australia 0.21, Western Australia SWIS 0.45, NWIS 0.56, Tasmania 0.21, Northern Territory DKIS 0.55, national 0.59. Source: Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, National Greenhouse Accounts Factors 2026. Grid factors fall as more renewables connect, so a 10 year figure is likely on the high side.

05 Compliance overview

Requirements by system type.

Select the system type and connection. The overview lists the standards, network rules and rebate conditions that typically apply. We check products against the same list before they reach a buyer.

Standards are national. Network connection rules are not, and they are the most common reason a system is rejected.

Requirements

Checked October 2026.

A summary only. It is not compliance certification, electrical design or legal advice, and it does not cover every requirement for every site. Electrical work must be carried out by a licensed electrician, and grid-connected systems require network approval before energisation. We do not certify or test products.
